"Strategic enterprises cannot manage technology costs in a vacuum," states Amalgam Insights analyst Kelly Teal. "Financial and operational executives must manage tech expenses with utilities, waste, and other recurring expenses to effectively oversee the full OpEx footprint."

Technology has become a spend category that can affect real estate, utilities, waste, and other operational costs by changing remote work and business model strategies.

Why It Matters

COVID-19 has shown business leaders the inarguable importance of managing finances. As such, enterprises can, and should, do more to control their recurring expenses, including those beyond the realm of traditional technology. Amalgam Insights’ IT Rule of 30 states that every unmanaged IT spend category averages a 30% opportunity to reduce costs, including those for telecom, mobility, cloud, and software. Other unchecked, IT- adjacent domains have, in general, room for savings of 10-40%. Organizations that put the time and energy into thoughtful, thorough cost controls give themselves the greatest chance at longevity and success.
